After a decade in fashion, I left to travel — and got hooked on yoga along the way. I missed my dog too much to stay gone, so I landed in San Francisco and started teaching.
One Pride weekend, mid-savasana, it hit me: everyone deserves to feel confident in what they're wearing, all day, no matter who they are. A tattoo, makeup or no makeup, an outfit — it's all part of how we tell our story.
The yoga "uniform" wasn't cutting it. Every brand on the market seemed to sell the same leggings, the same sports bra, in a dozen colorways — comfortable, sure, but forgettable. I wanted something that actually looked like me, on and off the mat. And I was tired of packing a second outfit just to leave the studio.
So I started YURIYASA: clothes built for class, then dinner, then a flight, then everywhere after — without a wardrobe change in between.
Being bored of the same look on every rack was part of it. But there was a deeper reason too. There was a stretch of years where the way women and immigrants were talked about — everywhere, all the time — made me want to build something that pushed back, quietly, every day. A business felt like a way to actually do that.
Women's rights are human rights.
I'm the daughter of an immigrant mother — I watched her navigate a world built against her, carrying more potential than it ever let her use. The more we recognize the greatness in women, there's only one direction left. Up.
